Introduction to ski touring

The Mont Blanc Massif above Saint Gervais les Bains and surrounding areas such as Les Aravis and the Aiguilles Rouges have a wealth of ski touring terrain on glaciers, through trees, remote hidden valleys and though summer alpine meadows making it a great place to begin ski touring. This course will cover the skills necessary to enjoy and travel safely through this huge variety of terrain and is aimed at all competent on piste skiers.

Season: January, March and April

7 day program

  • Day one. Arrive at Gite Mont Joly.

  • Day two. Personal ski day on piste. Meet the Guides in the evening to discuss the program and check equipment.

  • Day three. The day will be completed at Les Contamines Montjoie ski area. The focus on the day will be learning the essential skills for ski touring such as; the use of an avalanche transceiver, shovel and probe, skinning and the use of ski crampons.

  • Day four. An introductory tour in the Chamonix valley. For example, the ascent of the Col des Dards (2790m) and the Aiguilles Crochues North (2840m).

  • Day five. The day will be based at Les Contamines Montjoie. We will aim to complete the traverse of the Rochers des Enclaves (2465m). This is a longer ski tour putting into practice the skills learnt over the past few days.

  • Day six. Following on from yesterday the aim will be to complete a tour such as; the Crochues-Berard Traverse in the Aiguille Rouges, the Croisse Baulet (2236m) or in mid to late season, the world famous Vallee Blanche in Chamoinx.

  • Day seven. Depart Gite Mont Joly.
